Schroeder Brings Life-long Passion for Beef Industry to Beef Council Board

Madison Doeschot - Nebraska Beef Council | May 12, 2025

John Schroeder, District 9 Representative

John Schroeder, one of four new Nebraska Beef Council Board members, brings decades of experience and a deep passion for the cattle industry to his role. Originally from Redfield, South Dakota, Schroeder grew up immersed in agriculture, participating in 4-H and livestock judging. He earned his bachelor’s degree in animal science from South Dakota State University, where his foundation in beef production began.

Schroeder’s career started at Cargill in Dodge City, Kansas, where he worked his way through the beef packing plant before becoming a fat cattle buyer. For seven years, he procured cattle across Central Nebraska, building strong relationships with producers. Today, Schroeder manages Darr Feedlot in Cozad, Nebraska, overseeing operations, cattle health, and facility maintenance while leading an experienced management team.

With a longstanding commitment to advancing the beef industry, Schroeder has been an active leader in Nebraska Cattlemen. He served as Chairman of the Marketing and Commerce Committee, sat on the Executive Board, and contributed to the Nebraska Beef Quality Assurance Task Force, promoting beef safety and quality standards. These roles have fueled his desire to give back and advocate for the industry.

“I’m a big supporter of beef demand and see this as an opportunity to give back to producers,” Schroeder shared. “The Beef Council is well-run, and I want to continue communicating how effectively checkoff dollars are being used. It’s important to remain innovative and ensure we’re maximizing every dollar to promote beef.”

Looking ahead, Schroeder aims to support the Beef Council’s efforts to connect with producers and strengthen consumer demand. Schroeder currently serves as the District 9 representative, replacing Jeff Rudolph.
